We introduced hemp on our blog some time ago.
Hemp possesses unique skin-climate properties. Its fibers naturally regulate temperature. In summer, they keep you pleasantly cool, while in winter they create a cozy climate. A microscope reveals why: the fibers contain tiny air pockets that allow them to "breathe." On cold days, these pockets fill with body heat and store it. On warm days, they ensure a light and airy feel.

Please note: The fabric is pre-washed at the factory, but shrinkage may still occur. To be on the safe side, allow for a shrinkage of 5 to 10%!
Like wool, hemp is a natural product. The fiber thickness can vary, and foreign fibers such as hay, straw, or fibers from the factory may be present, which can lead to a slightly uneven appearance.

Color bleeding: As is typical for jeans, the fabric will bleed color during the first few washes. Please be sure to wash it separately initially! We've included a sample image in the gallery showing the color difference after one wash. After several washes, the fabric will no longer be as dark, but rather lighter, as is typical for jeans.

Hemp Canvas

This fabric is a real workhorse. Coarse, sturdy, and wonderfully durable. At first, it feels stiff and rough, but it softens with washing and especially with sewing, soon becoming very comfortable against the skin. However, the first one or two wears are not suitable for very sensitive skin. An unusual but very helpful idea is to sleep on the fabric for one or two nights before wearing it.

Great for forest kindergarten trousers, bags, backpacks, summer hats and anything that needs to be durable.

Combinations and cuffs

The fabric is woven, which isn't normally used with cuffs. However, cuffs can be used with certain patterns. Our stormy sky cuff matches the canvas fabric almost perfectly.

We recommend the color raven blue for the sewing thread.

Design examples

We are pleased to showcase some design examples in the photos, which were provided to us by enthusiastic customers. Many thanks again for that!

You see a classic example of jeans, sewn by Katharina . Using the Fidibux pattern by Rabaukowitsch .

The second example shows a beautiful denim skirt made by Gwand von Hand.

The skirt was sewn using a pattern from Fibre Mood magazine. The top is sewn from Cino Magnolia wool-silk yarn.

materials and information

100% hemp (kba)
The hemp is not kba. See item description for more information.

Woven fabric pure hemp

The hemp fiber is one of the strongest fibers in the textile sector. Therefore it makes sense to use the fabric for stable trousers and skirts. The fabric is especially great for romping children - it is airy and light for the summer, but very robust for its low basis weight.

certification

In contrast to all other fabrics in the shop, this hemp has no kba or kbt certification (kba = controlled organic cultivation). At the moment kba certified hemp is almost impossible to get on the market as for most consumers or producers there doesn't seem to be enough value between kba grown hemp and hemp grown without certification. This is because the conventional cultivation of hemp directly on the field differs little from kba cultivation.

The hemp plant is very needless. It hardly needs water and can be planted almost anywhere without using insecticide or other poison. Since it grows extremely fast, weed growth is not a problem either.

Nevertheless, we as a company consider it worthwhile to have a kba certification for our hemp products as well, as this ensures that the surrounding fields are also farmed sensibly and that no conventional agriculture with all the problems for the environment is practiced there. Therefore, we will continue to look for kba hemp on the manufacturer side in order to spice up the hemp woven goods with an extra portion of organic in the future.

use of the substance

The hemp weave is light and airy, yet robust. It is suitable for the production of light summer pants, skirts or hats. Like wool and silk, hemp has good UV protection, so it is also popular with small children and people who are sensitive to the sun.

Hemp in general is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. In addition to UV protection, the fabric also has good antibacterial properties and, like wool, is 100% biodegradable. Due to its structure, which retains very little air, hemp always feels cool to the touch, making it an ideal fiber for the summer. The fabric can absorb water well, but at the same time release it back into the environment quickly.

care instructions

Like wool clothing, hemp can be hand and machine washed. We recommend machine washing on a wool cycle up to a maximum of 30 degrees with liquid organic wool detergent. Detergent powder is not recommended for hemp, as the grains can sneak into the air pockets and permanently destroy the structure there. Can shrink up to 10% depending on the washing temperature.

The hemp should be washed once individually during the pre-wash so that it does not rub off. Later, it is best to wash them together with similar colors.

care: Hemp is very undemanding. It is also sufficient if it is aired more than washed, but it easily withstands normal washing. Hemp just doesn't like drying - it damages the fibre. Tossing him in to soften him up a bit is no drama though.

Basically, hemp feels a little rough on the skin at first, but that settles down when you wear it, but hemp gets softer with every wear and wash (but especially the first).

Here we have found a detailed care article about hemp, which is certainly also interesting for you.

Attention: The fabric is pre-washed at the factory, but shrinkage may still occur. To be on the safe side, an enema of 5 to 10% should be expected!

Like wool, hemp is a natural product. Here the fiber is always of different thickness and there may be foreign fibers such as hay, straw or fiber fly from the factory, which can lead to a slightly uneven appearance!

sewing instructions

Woven fabrics are sewn differently than our soft, stretchy wool fabrics. We recommend universal needles and finishing the raw edges. When sewing together after overcasting, for example, the straight stitch is a good idea. At places that are subject to stress, such as the inseam, two parallel seams are also welcome.
