Help for hedgehogs in need

For every meter sold, we donate €2 to the hedgehog rescue organization "aktion tier Igelzentrum" . Unfortunately, these wonderful animals are now massively endangered in Germany, and the volunteer-run hedgehog centers deserve all the help they can get.

There's now a great use for old cotton scraps. The Wildau Hedgehog Center is asking for small sleeping bags for hedgehogs. A video tutorial is available in the first comment here (link leads to Facebook). The finished sleeping bags can then be sent directly to Wildau.

Thank you for your help for the little critters!

Wool silk hedgehog on cinnamon

This wool-silk fabric is offered here in cinnamon with a hedgehog pattern. The hedgehog pattern is printed in a very dark brown.

Regarding patterns in general – our patterns are printed and can rub off under a lot of friction. We therefore advise against using patterned fabrics in areas subject to extreme friction, such as the knees of small children.

Combination and cuffs

In general, this fabric can of course be combined with the solid cinnamon fabric . The solid cinnamon fabric has a very slightly different shade, which is only noticeable upon close inspection. Other colors such as the current rainbow stripes , emerald green , forest green , and carmine red go perfectly with it.

The fine cinnamon-colored cuff matches the overall color well, though it's slightly darker. The fine dark cocoa cuff also goes perfectly with the print.

With wool/silk, you can always use the fabric itself as a cuff. Just be sure to choose a tighter factor, as wool fibers are very stretchy. For example, for neckbands on a close-fitting shirt, we use a factor of 0.55-0.6. This might seem much too tight at first, but it usually fits very well!

Only when sewing in an elastic band for trousers with a waistband, and if wool/silk fabric is chosen.

For a little more stability, in addition to the fine cuffs, a wool jersey fabric is also well suited, as it has a little more body.

Design examples

We are pleased to showcase some design examples in the photos, which were provided to us by enthusiastic customers. Many thanks again for that!

Since we have already had many editions of our beloved hedgehogs, you will see some pictures of similar print and color versions in the gallery.

The wonderful women's shirt Lady Reeva by Mialuna , which you can buy in our shop, was sewn by madly_marvelous and was presented beautifully.

Next you will see the Lybstes Sweater combined with wool/silk mini petrol stripes .

The Svenja pleated trousers from Brimami were combined with the Klimperklein raglan shirt in cinnamon solid color.

materials and information

70% wool (merino wool) / 30% silk (mulberry silk) – organic jersey/mulesing free

wool/silk

Our organic wool-silk fabric (kbt, mulesing-free) is produced according to the highest ecological criteria. It is therefore particularly suitable for the sensitive skin of babies and toddlers as well as for all clothing that is worn close to the skin. Outerwear is also given something very special by the delicate shimmer of the wool-silk fabric, so that the fabric is also ideal for adult clothing.

Different batches

Please note that this fabric comes back to the shop from time to time as a perennial favorite and that the individual batches can differ slightly in terms of color and feel, so that it may not be possible to sew them into one piece of clothing if you want it to fit exactly.

Wool as a natural product

Please note that wool is a natural product. Here it can happen that the threads are thicker in some places than in others because the wool fibers are not all the same. Dyes may not be perfectly even as some fibers take color better than others. And there can also be wool fluff in the fabric that comes from fiber flight, which cannot be completely avoided, especially when processing wool products. No piece of fabric is like the other.

Characteristics

Wool is naturally self-cleaning and antibacterial. It absorbs moisture without feeling clammy and transports it outwards, away from the body. Merino new wool is very finely crimped, does not scratch and is wonderfully soft and fluffy. Mulberry silk ensures a pleasantly soft and skin-soothing wearing comfort. Silk has a temperature-regulating effect, warms in cold temperatures and cools on warm days. Since wool and silk clothing only rarely needs to be washed - brushing or airing it out is usually enough - the clothing is also very easy to care for.

care instructions

It is optimal if the woolen clothing is simply aired out in damp weather (e.g. in the bathroom when showering). The water vapor that meets the fabric then automatically transports away smaller dirt particles and bad odours.

If the clothes are heavily soiled, they can be washed by hand or on the wool cycle of the washing machine at 30 degrees with wool detergent.

Since wool fibers are more sensitive when wet than when dry, it is recommended to dry the wool silk lying flat on a towel.

A lot of dirt can also be removed by tapping or brushing (e.g. with the miracle brush available in the shop).

sewing instructions

Wool silk can be sewn on the overlock as well as on the conventional sewing machine. It is important to use a stretchable stitch (e.g. zigzag stitch, pseudo-overlock stitch, etc.) and super stretch needles. The needles are specially made for very stretchy fabrics and ensure that the threads are not severed when sewing, but pushed to the side. This way there are no holes in the sewing machine in the long run. It may be helpful to lower the presser foot pressure on the sewing machine, or if this is not possible, use a walking foot. This prevents “wavy formation” when sewing.

As with other thin fabrics, it is advisable not to start sewing at the very edge of the fabric, as this can sometimes "eat" into the machine. Here you can start sewing 2-3cm from the edge and sew up the beginning after a few stitches using the reverse button. Holding onto the protruding threads and gently pulling them backwards also makes it easier to start.

Wool silk fabric is stretchier than most comparable cotton jersey. Here it can make sense to sew one size smaller than normal and to stay with the usual dress size in length. As every pattern and build is different, it is highly recommended to place well-fitting garments on top of the appropriate pattern to provide a match.

Mulesing Free

All of our wool/silk fabrics are mulesing-free. This means that "our" woolly sheep do not remove the skin around the tail without anesthesia to prevent pest infestation. This procedure has been sharply criticized by animal protection organizations. As a matter of principle, we only offer guaranteed mulesing-free wool/silk fabrics.

...we also offer patterns? They are specifically designed for wool/silk and other wool fabrics, as wool fabrics behave slightly differently than other jersey fabrics, which is what most competitor patterns are designed for. With our patterns you can be sure that everything fits together well.
