Hemp Lyocell woven fabric
We previously featured hemp and Tencel/Lyocell on our blog . There you'll also find tips on sewing woven fabrics in general and hemp/Lyocell in particular.
Hemp possesses unique skin-climate properties. Its fibers naturally regulate temperature. In summer, they keep you pleasantly cool, while in winter they create a cozy climate. A microscope reveals why: the fibers contain tiny air pockets that allow them to "breathe." On cold days, these pockets fill with body heat and store it. On warm days, they ensure a light and airy feel.
Hemp Lyocell Vintage Stripes
The lyocell hemp fabric has a smooth and soft drape. Hemp is usually rather rough before the first wear, but the addition of lyocell makes the fabric soft and smooth against the skin from the start, and it drapes beautifully.
Danger: The fabric is pre-washed at the factory, but some shrinkage may still occur. To be on the safe side, you should allow for a shrinkage of 5 to 10%!
Like wool, hemp is a natural product. The fiber thickness varies, and foreign fibers such as hay, straw, or fibers from the factory can be present, resulting in a slightly uneven appearance, as you can clearly see in the detailed images.
Combination, sewing thread and cuffs
The fabric is woven, meaning it's not normally sewn with ribbing. However, if you'd like to, you certainly can, so we've included some pictures with styling ideas. This can also serve as inspiration to get a good idea of the color or what you might want to combine it with.
Many colors are suitable as sewing thread - we recommend the colors Mirror Lake or Meadow.
Quick sewing tips
Here's a short blog post about it.
Otherwise, for trousers, we recommend sewing on a normal waistband made of the same fabric and then either using a zipper/buttons or an elastic band in the waistband.
For blouses or similar items, a facing can be a good option.
Woven fabrics should ideally be finished before sewing to prevent them from unraveling - for example, finish the edges of the individual pattern pieces with a zigzag stitch or overlock stitch and then sew them together with a triple straight stitch.
Careful pinning and ironing are important - woven fabrics are often described as easier to sew compared to jersey, but they are less forgiving of mistakes or sloppiness than stretchy jersey, which can be adjusted a little if necessary.
Design examples
We are pleased to showcase some design examples in the photos, which were provided to us by enthusiastic customers. Many thanks again for that!
Here we have the Sakura dress from Lemeldesign and the Belle beach dress from Rosarosa, combined with wool and silk Arctic Night & Gold.
The red dress with vintage stripe accents is the Daisy by Firlefanz . The red fabric is (unfortunately sold out) hemp lyocell in early burgundy.
The sewing pattern with the great back view is a back favorite - also from Lemeldesign.

is it hemp Is it really hemp? We know hemp as a slightly bulky fabric that only becomes really soft and great after a few rounds of wearing - but here we have a highly exciting mixture of hemp and the fiber Lyocell, which turns the fabric into a thin, smooth, blouse-like fabric - er is suitable for tops as well as trousers and is a real all-round wonder in summer.
certification
certification
In contrast to all other fabrics in the shop, this hemp has no kba or kbt certification (kba = controlled organic cultivation). At the moment kba certified hemp is almost impossible to get on the market as for most consumers or producers there doesn't seem to be enough value between kba grown hemp and hemp grown without certification. This is because the conventional cultivation of hemp directly on the field differs little from kba cultivation.
The hemp plant is very needless. It hardly needs water and can be planted almost anywhere without using insecticide or other poison. Since it grows extremely fast, weed growth is not a problem either.
Nevertheless, we as a company consider it worthwhile to have a kba certification for our hemp products as well, as this ensures that the surrounding fields are also farmed sensibly and that no conventional agriculture with all the problems for the environment is practiced there. Therefore, we will continue to look for kba hemp on the manufacturer side in order to spice up the hemp woven goods with an extra portion of organic in the future.
use of the substance

The hemp weave is light and airy, yet robust and very smooth and silky despite the hemp content. It is suitable for the production of light summer pants, skirts or hats. Like wool and silk, hemp has good UV protection, so it is also popular with small children and people who are sensitive to the sun. Lyocell is not as protective as silk or wool.
Hemp in general is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. In addition to UV protection, the fabric also has good antibacterial properties and, like wool, is 100% biodegradable. Due to its structure, which retains very little air, hemp always feels cool to the touch, making it an ideal fiber for the summer. The fabric can absorb water well, but at the same time release it back into the environment quickly.
care instructions
care instructions
Like wool clothing, hemp can be hand and machine washed. We recommend machine washing on a wool cycle up to a maximum of 30 degrees with liquid organic wool detergent. Detergent powder is not recommended for hemp, as the grains can sneak into the air pockets and permanently destroy the structure there. Can shrink up to 10% depending on the washing temperature.
The hemp should be washed once individually during the pre-wash so that it does not rub off. Later, it is best to wash them together with similar colors.
care: Hemp is very undemanding. It is also sufficient if it is aired more than washed, but it easily withstands normal washing. Hemp just doesn't like drying - it damages the fibre. Tossing him in to soften him up a bit is no drama though.
Here we have found a detailed care article about hemp, which is certainly also interesting for you.
Attention: The fabric is pre-washed at the factory, but shrinkage may still occur. To be on the safe side, an enema of 5 to 10% should be expected!
Like wool, hemp is a natural product. Here the fiber is always of different thickness and there may be foreign fibers such as hay, straw or fiber fly from the factory, which can lead to a slightly uneven appearance!

Woven fabrics are sewn differently than our soft, stretchy wool fabrics. We recommend universal needles and finishing the raw edges. When sewing together after overcasting, for example, the straight stitch is a good idea. At places that are subject to stress, such as the inseam, two parallel seams are also welcome.
